Landfall
Music by Richard S. Grossman
Words by Madeleine Hart & Richard S. Grossman
Inspiration can come from unexpected places. Sometimes, we don’t see or understand its significance until it is nurtured and given room to grow. Landfall is a collaboration between the seen and unseen; a true gift of the muse. I’m especially grateful to Madeleine Hart, songwriter and photographer extraordinaire whose artistry and soulfulness are a profound influence in my life.
We dedicate this song to the memory of our dear compadre and longtime collaborator, Lonnie Knight who would have turned 72 on December 14th, three days from this writing.

Four in the morning, watching you sleep
Fingers curled up like a child
Tracing the lines of the salt on your cheek
From dreams so restless and wild
Most of the time I know what to say
I reach for words – feel you slipping away
But I won’t give up, and I won’t give in
This journey never ends
I’ve seen your thunder and you’ve seen my rage
Like a hurricane inside the soul
Crossing the lines of the battles we wage
That threatens to swallow us whole
Most of the time, we can see our way through
Could this be the end of our dream coming true
But I won’t give up, and I won’t give in
This journey never ends
You broke the levee that was holding me in
And the seawall is crashing the strand
Like a ship without harbor tossed in the wind
I’ll never see landfall again
No I’ll never see landfall again
In the morning l sail so far out to sea
That the curve of the earth is all I can see
You broke the levee that was holding me in
And this heartbreak is all I can stand
Like a ship without harbor tossed in the wind
I’ll never see landfall again
No I’ll never see landfall again
