I Believe is a product of my rather incessant musings about the meaning of spirituality and Life purpose  ⏤ a light-hearted subject to be sure. This song began taking shape when I came to a point of clarity about what ideas or elements floating about the Universe help me reconcile my place on this mortal coil. I realized that, at least for me, it’s all about Faith, Light and Love. Faith conquers fear, light overcomes the dark and opens the heart and love counters hate.

This dualistic line of thinking is, perhaps, a bit over simplified, but helps me focus on the essence of spirituality and purpose, which makes it easier to communicate my thoughts and feelings. One might say it’s illuminating.

Like many who feel driven to express themselves creatively, I maintain archives of ideas, lyrics, chord progressions and melodies that come to me in various forms and from often disparate sources. In this case,  the chorus melody, along with the title, came to me a year or so ago while doodling on the guitar.

I quickly documented the basic structure of the song with a guitar/vocal in GarageBand on my iPad.  As often happens, I revisited the archive when considering material for this project, liking the idea enough to finish writing the lyrics and completing the arrangement, adding a bridge and an additional verse.  I’m pleased to be able to share this song with you. My hope is that it may inspire you to reconnect with your own spirituality and purpose, whatever that may be.

I’m very grateful for the very collaborative contributions from Edie Raye and Colleen Martin (Lolo’s Ghost, Blaze Kings, Oake & Paine, et al) on the vocals, especially the outro chorus, which I had been hearing in my head for weeks. Thanks for bringing it to life guys.
